This is a system similar to CTCSS, but instead of a sub-audible tone, operators can choose from about 83 Digital codes, each 3 digits long. Many repeaters require incoming transmissions to include a specific tone to trigger the repeater system to retransmit a signal, and some repeaters also transmit a tone.ĭCS = Digital Code Squelch. The tones are simply a way to tell a radio to ignore any signals on its receive frequency that don't also contain the specified tone. Contrary to what the term 'privacy code' implies, these tones do not encode, encrypt, or scramble a transmission.
This system uses one of 50 user-selectable sub-audible tones to filter incoming signals.
CTCSS = Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System, also known as a PL (Private Line) tone, and on FRS & GMRS radios, its usually called a 'privacy tone' or 'privacy code'.
